Colorado Springs, Colo, Chapter of the Red Cross reports that Trevor Pruitt was returning to school from a field trip when Alesia Ricks noticed he was having a seizure and not breathing. Driver Steve Quick pulled over to the side of a busy road and began chest compressions while Kim Richardson opened Trevor’s airway. Trevor was transported to a local hospital and released later that evening. Trevor’s parents credit the Red Cross training the paraprofessionals received for saving their son’s life. “When you do take CPR and first aid, take it seriously because you never know when you’ll need to use it. It could be 20 years like it was for me,” says Steve.

Greater Idaho Chapter (Boise) reports that two local 14-year-olds were recently featured in People Magazine. Justin McAfee went into cardiac arrest at baseball practice.  Fortunately Jessica Moncrieff was playing soccer nearby. Jessica, who had taken a Red Cross babysitting class, jumped into action and performed CPR for several minutes until help arrived. Justin is planning to take a CPR class now too; he says everyone should learn how to save a life.

Schools

Prepare Students and Staff to Respond to Emergencies at School

It's a sad fact - today's volatile world climate has put students at risk. Unprecedented violence, natural and human-caused disasters all influence the atmosphere of our schools and affect student performance and behavior. Whether you're an elementary school teacher, a school nurse, a high school coach or a college professor, you're doing your best to address these issues. But most schools simply do not have the time, funding or resources to develop an entire curriculum dedicated to creating better-prepared schools and safer lives for students.

Discover New Ways to Prepare for Emergencies

In addition to the first aid, CPR and AED courses chosen by thousands of schools across the nation, the Red Cross has launched "Be Red Cross Ready". This important initiative helps families, schools, workplaces and communities prepare for emergency situations.

Save Time and Resources

Training can be provided through your local Red Cross chapter or by your own teachers and can be offered when it's most convenient for you - during the school day, after school or even on a weekend. Instructor materials are easy to use and reduce instructor preparation time.
